We design stores that sell. Lighting, fixturing, adjacency and flow handled with the same rigour as the aesthetic, because a beautiful shop that does not move stock has failed. Delivered for clients including Garmin SA and Verimark.
Retail interior design and store fit-out across South Africa
Retail design has one job a residential or hospitality project does not: it has to sell. A store can look striking and still fail commercially if the lighting does not flatter the product, the fixturing does not support the category, or the flow does not guide a customer naturally toward the till. HEID designs retail interiors with that commercial reality built into the brief from day one, not layered on afterwards.
Lighting, fixturing, adjacency and flow
Retail lighting is a technical discipline as much as an aesthetic one — colour temperature and beam angle affect how a product actually reads to a customer, and getting it wrong is one of the most common (and most fixable) reasons a fit-out underperforms. Fixturing has to work for the specific category, whether that is technical hardware, fashion, or FMCG, and needs to hold up to daily handling, not just look right on install day.
Adjacency — what sits next to what — and flow — how a customer actually moves through the space — are planned before any finishes are chosen. A store that looks beautiful but routes customers past the wrong products in the wrong order is a design that has not done its job. We plan the commercial logic of a retail space with the same rigour we bring to the visual concept.
Delivered work
HEID has delivered retail interiors for Garmin SA, including their retail environment, and for Verimark. Both projects required the same disciplined approach: understanding the product category and customer journey first, then building the design language, fixturing and lighting scheme around that commercial logic — full turnkey, from concept through procurement to installation.
Garmin SA in particular has worked with HEID across more than one environment — both workplace and retail — which speaks to the kind of long-term relationship a turnkey design-and-build studio can offer a corporate client with more than one space to manage.
Full turnkey delivery
As with every HEID project, retail work is handled end to end: concept and space planning, technical documentation, procurement of fixtures and finishes, coordination of appointed trades, and on-site project management through to opening. You deal with one studio and one point of accountability, not a design consultant, a separate shopfitter and a separate procurement contact working in isolation from each other.
Project minimum
We typically take on retail projects from R750,000, with smaller scopes considered case by case where the brief is a good fit for the studio.
